Happy Wednesday! It’s hump-day, this week is flying by, which in some ways is a good thing (and in some others, not such a great thing, as there is still more work to be done)…
When it comes to raising racial awareness at work, many of us get a bit dubious as to how it can even be done. After all, we are all professionals, and especially as minorities in the corporate world, challenging pre-conceived notions can be threatening to our careers and…our paychecks!
Yet, one of the first steps in lessening the gender and racial divide at work is to raise awareness. As many of ours and others’ implicit (and explicit) biases are buried deep within a lack of awareness, bringing the issue to the forefront is a powerful remedy! Yet, how is one to go about changing the status quo, especially as a minority in the workplace?
. Speak Up! Our voices are powerful motivators, yet unfortunately often lack in the corporate conversational landscape. Don’t wait for someone else to voice their opinion, speak up about what matters to you and how you better fit in to the organization!
. Show Up! One of the best ways to raise gender and racial awareness at work is to simply…show up! Be there, be actively present at meetings, team events and gatherings. Do not just hide at your desk until payday and disappear again! Sporting your natural crown of hair? Show up with it, and bring a positive attitude along! Are you the only minority in your team? Don’t miss an opportunity to show your face, and speak up!
. Dare to bring a different perspective! There’s a reason why teams are put into place: to challenge the status quo and bring different perspectives together. So bring your differences and perspectives, and dare to present who you are! You might just pleasantly surprise yourself…and others!
How are you raising diversity awareness at work?
