So the next time you’re pondering how to handle office housework:
- Add it to your self review and tie it to the team/organization’s goals
- Look for company policies on task assignments
- Consider your other deliverables and advocate for the most impactful work you have to complete

#ontheblog this week, we’re debunking some of the gender biases that affect performance reviews. These are uncomfortable, and often unconscious biases that can negatively impact how women’s performances are perceived (see blog link in bio).

The more we’re aware of these, the more we are able to tackle the uncomfortable conversations and questions that arise at performance review time. These are important because they can affect entire careers and professional futures, impacting the nature of the voices and inputs in our organizations, and ultimately the economic, political and social landscape of our society.

I was at the hair salon the other day when a lady

I was at the hair salon the other day when a lady came in, literally fell on the stylist’s chair and said in one breath: “I’m so exhausted, it’s the holidays and there’s so much to do.” And I felt that in the depths of my silk press…

The reality is, behind all the cheer and festive nature of the season, there are hours of invisible labor performed by brave women and moms, on top of their usual full loads…And many, if not most, women and moms are tiiiireeeeddd…

What we often don’t see during the holidays are all the gender stereotypes and roles that are confirmed and reinforced during a season that can be especially exhausting and tricky for women and moms…It can be a season of high stress, of couples going at each other, and moms hanging by a thread…

So how about we bring back rested women during the holidays?

Although these are not the stories we like to tell at the Christmas table, they are necessary tough conversations to have to challenge the stereotypes that end up harming us.
In the words of the amazing scholar and researcher @brenebrown : “When we silence our stories and disengage from tough conversations, we confirm the stereotypes about power and gender. But when we dare to share our stories and engage in real dialogue, we challenge these stereotypes and create a more inclusive, equitable world.”

I’ve found being aware of this bias is the first step…Balancing it with asking for more actionable feedback, is the second step in addressing it as a woman being reviewed.
